zoooooooooo

Oh my! The zoo was such fun!
I would like to point out, before we start, that my hair is looking extra lion-mane-y this morning. It is pretty glorious and big and reminds me of a friend we met at the zoo.
ok, lets start
Anne, Shaynah and I had been talking about going to the zoo for over a month. It was going to be my b-day outing, but it was more of a "kendras-birthday-kate-will-be-here-in-a-month-we-haven't-all-3-hung-out-since-celebration" outing.
Zoo Keeper Shaynah
our first friends. I loved them dearly and wanted to jump in... but Anne pointed out that the water smelled horrid.
he was quite happy to see us
this was one of Anne's favorite... the arctic foxes. They were quite sneaky, playing with each other. We think he was trying to come visit us, as he attempted to dig out.
this is the camp fire the fox built. he needed to keep warm in the chilly 82 degree weather. one of my FAVORITES! Wilhelm the polar bear
hhmmm... Nathan's Hot Dogs... or Black Bears?
(Anne pointed out that since her belly is closest to the camera, it made it look bigger than it is. I think she would want me to tell you that. )
But this is when we went on the carousel. Shaynah was a party-pooper and would not come with us.here is the rhino and tiger that chased me the whole time. somewhat terrifying.

the entire time we were looking at the lions, Shaynah sang "Circle of Life" in her operatic voice...
his "lady friend" went to hide behind a rock. We figured it was their rendezvous spot.

our FAVORITE! Kendall! He was the only chimp we could really see, and he sat next to the window the whole time. He had eyes for Anne... he would stare at her for a while, pick his nose and eat it, check his nails, look at her again...
before we found him, we had each picked a chimp we liked the best (there were pictures of each of them) I picked Ruby, Anne picked Terry and Shaynah picked Kendall... lucky.

the tram ride back to the car...
Anne was sitting in the back, in her own seat.

Shaynah had run after the bus to ask them to wait a moment for us, because one of her friends was pregnant...
"what? she has a stroller?" the bus driver asked
"no... she is the stroller"

Thank you ladies for such a fun trip!

best. night. ever.

yesterday was amazing. so many amazing little things happened...

1) my favorite barista at the starbucks by work gave me a free vente soy latte. Just because "they miss my happy face"...
I used to go in all the time, but realized i was not being a good steward. So that made my afternoon happy!
2) MOTHER OF PEARL! (that is what shaynah and i say when we are shocked.)
many many amazing things happened on the office. they played a dolly parton song, which i got super excited about! (if you don't watch the show, go ahead and skip to 3... ) then the 2 best characters in television finally got engaged! it was AWESOME

3) this one doesn't affect me directly, but it made me smile. i was raised a UCLA fan. if you are a bruins fan, your worst enemy is USC. Just a fact. that is one of the reasons why i could never marry matt leinart of the AZ Cardinals. That, and the fact that he isn't a Christian.
anyway, yesterday they played Oregon State... and in a HUGE upset, OS WON! HIIILLLARIOUS!

This is Pete Carroll, who is not a nice man. He is their coach and tends to be very arrogant in interviews. I do not prefer him.

4) EEEEK... this one has had me grinning all morning... last night it was made official... the Dodgers are going to the playoffs. I just saw the footage from last night of the guys finding out. So HILARIOUS! They were spraying each other with champagne, dancing, laughing, jumping on each other... the fans were going nuts. This is very exciting. my team has NOT been good in a very long time. Then this incredible wonderful man waltzed in...
and we are going to playoffs! HUZZAH!

5) this is perhaps the best news of the entire week... last night we all got our acts together and I got to video chat with Taige, Ivy and Kat from Wales! It was incredible seeing their faces!
I didn't get much time with Ivy (she ran in while i was talking to Kat) but these are screen captures from our convo... ichat is the best thing ever

(their view... mine was much better.)

I don't have pic's of my talk with Taige... but it did my heart good to see my other brother. I was a happy girl last night... that is for sure
Please pray for our 3 friends, that the Lord continue to meet them and pour grace on them, that they are provided opportunities to present the gospel to both the kids they teach, and strangers they interact with, and that they all grow in friendship and fellowship with each other!
Amen!

ocho nueve

1) in caregroup we are reading excerpts from "A Quest for More" by Paul Tripp. This week we read the chapter The Costume Kingdom. I would encourage EVERYONE to read it.
At one point Tripp says "The Psalms welcome us to a faith where God's agenda is more important then ours and where we are asked to live out our faith in the context of a disastrously broken world. But this is also precisely where we experience the highest personal joys, as we put our hope in the covenant love of the Lord and make the pursuit of his glory the goal of our lives."

he then quotes Psalm 115:

Not to us Lord, not to us
but to your name be the glory
because of your love and faithfulness

So good.

2) the Jonas Brothers have the cutest song out now. It is called Love Bug and is incredibly cheesy. BUT, there is a line that leapt out at me...
"You're beautiful but you don't even try
Modesty is just so hard to find "

(this video is from the MTV Video Music Awards)

I heard their dad (a former pastor) in an interview. They asked him if he had ever dreamed his boys to be rock stars. He said "we aren't raising musicians. That isn't our goal. We are raising husbands and fathers"

3)Office starts back up this week. HUZZAH.

4) Steve Smith is BAAAACK

now THAT is a face that says "I am sorry i punched a team mate and I promise to control my temper and have a good attitude and be a team player and take us to the Super Bowl"-

let's just talk about the 1st half of the game. I would like to pretend that the rest didn't happen. Can we do that? No? I do have to say that Smitty was awesome. Before the game he said that he wasn't going to run in and start off with a big ol' play now that he is back. Um... the picture below is from the first MINUTE of the game. Boy has got some MAD ups. (he can jump high...)

This picture is RIGHT after the corner blitz that was the turning point in the game, and where everything rapidly went downhill. Poor Shake-n-Bake-Jake.

I don't want to talk about the rest of the game. I really don't.

anyway... whatever.

After last night's caregroup, this song was fresh on my mind, so I will end with it.

In case I haven't told you all in a while, i love each one of you, my dear friends.

Thy way, not mine, O Lord
However dark it be
Lead me by Thine own hand
Choose out the path for me, for me
Smooth let it be or rough
It will still be the best
Winding or straight, it leads
Right onward to Thy rest
I dare not choose my lot
I would not, if I might
Choose Thou for me, my God
So I can walk aright
Take Thou my cup, and it
With joy or sorrow fill
As best to Thee may seem
Choose Thou my good and ill
Not mine, not mine the choice
In all things great or small
Be Thou my guide, my strength
My wisdom and my all, my wisdom and my all

flesh wound

2nd today, but i wanted to share while it was fresh on my mind

so, you have a deep deep wound.
first, you have to clean it out. this hurts as much, if not more, than the original wound. you really have to clean, to make sure there is no infection
then you put your band-aid on it. i use the cowboy ones i saw in Wilmington.
the temptation for me is to slap the cowboy band-aid on that sucker and then ignore it. not look at it until it is totally healed. just pretend it isn't there. that will hurt less.
but you can't
you have to re-clean it from time to time. to really insure there is no infection. you have to take off the band-aid, pour some more peroxide on it, wash it, and put on a fresh band-aid. it hurts like heeeeeeeeeelllllllll. you wince. you bite your lip. if you are a wimp, you might even shed a tear. but you know that you have to do it. if you don't, it could become infected. and that will hurt a lot more. maybe not now, but down the road.
you might have to repeat this process a few times.
but the end result is a clean, healed wound. and an awesome scar.

so many times i want to ignore it. the band-aid will work. throw on a little neosporin and hope for the best. sometimes that is enough. but for big wounds, that ends with a painful infection that takes so much longer to heal.

the Lord made me clean a wound yesterday. even taking the band-aid off hurt. the rest hurt more. i had ignored it for a while. and i was a wimp and cried the whole time. but today, it was so much better.
i already know i am going to have to re-clean it a few more times. and i am preparing for it.
the Lord has poured so much grace out already. often i picture the pouring out of grace to be like a watering can. but lately, if feel like i am in a pool of it. able to go underwater and be completely submerged.
how kind to have a father that doesn't let our wounds become infected. He knows that in the long run, this is going to help it heal faster. i know that because of this, further down the road it will be so much easier. otherwise, it would sneak up on me and hurt a million times worse. and i will end up with an awesome scar i can look at and be reminded of His faithfulness

My greatest need has been taken care of. What else matters? Not a little flesh wound, that is for sure.

Who has believed what he has heard from us?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For he grew up before him like a young plant,
and like a root out of dry ground;
he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
and no beauty that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by men;
a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief;
and as one from whom men hide their faces
he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

 Surely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
smitten by God, and afflicted.
But he was wounded for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his stripes we are healed.
 All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
yet he opened not his mouth;
like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
so he opened not his mouth. By oppression and judgment he was taken away;
and as for his generation, who considered
that he was cut off out of the land of the living,
stricken for the transgression of my people?
And they made his grave with the wicked
and with a rich man in his death,
although he had done no violence,
and there was no deceit in his mouth.

Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him;
he has put him to grief;
when his soul makes an offering for guilt,
he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied;
by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant,
make many to be accounted righteous,
and he shall bear their iniquities.
Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,
and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,
because he poured out his soul to death
and was numbered with the transgressors;
yet he bore the sin of many,
and makes intercession for the transgressors.

it is a bob dylan day.
for some reason, his music is the only thing i want to hear today.
a little bit of melancholy, a little bit of happy, a lot of awesome.
PS
go panthers. 2-0... last time we were 2-0, we went to the superbowl.

things that make my work day better

1) Pandora.com. Right now my Modest Mouse play list is on. Earlier it was Patsy Cline. And even before that it was Ryan Adams. So much goodness. So much

2) ESPN. I go through 4 cycles of Sports Center. But I love it. And by the end of the day, I can fill anyone in on Tom Brady's condition, the wild card race, Michael Phelps hosting SNL and the NL west standings.

3) looking at pictures of these girls on my lunch break...

4) hitting up the coffee machine 3 or 4 times

All of this makes 5:00 come much faster
I'm going to the beach for an overnight...
pics will follow

PS- i found this on Molly Piper's blog. Get ready for your world to be rocked.

of all the days

today was NOT the day to leave my camera at home.
no sir.
or ma'am.
today the Telly awards came in

the Tellys are like the Emmys, but not for actors and directors. They are for editors, audio guys, and the people who do all the hard work. Our group won a bunch of them this year. I have seen them on shelves here, but never really held one
FACT: i have always wanted some kind of award in my house, are really prestigious one that I can have friends take pictures with, pretending to give their acceptance speech. I thought that would be so fun.
ANYWAY
I called one of our editors to let him know his Telly had arrived. He could care less. He already has 10.
I decided his Telly needed some love. Since Dan was going to ignore it, i took it out of the box and gave an acceptance speech to a co-worker. i played with it for a while, she took a picture with her phone... it was the most fun
Then Dan walked in.
Thankfully, he finds me delightful, so he laughed.
----
To this day, my favorite hymn is "Come Thou Fount"
my favorite version is Sufjan Stevens
(the quality isn't the best.)

a while back i was curious on what a "fetter" was...

1 : a chain or shackle for the feet
2 : something that confines : restraint

"Let thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee"

Praise Him!

light summer reading

i love to read. in fact, i have no self control when i really love a book. there were nights in college where i didn't sleep... not because i was studying, but because i was really into a book. sometimes, i can't put a book down.
i love classic authors. but i also enjoy a good modern day novel.
my last record was reading the nanny diaries in one day.
then i decided to go cold turkey for a while and not read
until last weekend
when stephenie meyer walked into my life
some of you have probably heard of the twilight series... i won't go into it. i am sure some of you are rolling your eyes right now
but these books are incredible
amazing
not the best thing i have ever read, but the most captivating.
i started reading them last saturday. i just wanted a light read at the beach. i finished the first book in about 8 hours
then i called mindy to and asked to borrow her copy of the 2nd (well, it was more like a demand that she bring it by the house that night) and i read it at work. (something that is encouraged by my boss. don't worry)
i am now on the 3rd.
i am buying the 4th this weekend... forcing myself to take a break until then (i will have book 3 done by tomorrow.)

you need to understand... these aren't tiny books. new moon (the one i devoured) is almost 600 pages... see?
and i am not the only lame sap crazy about these books. I can throw half a dozen other girls under the bus right now. one being my best friend (who admitted to weeping in her bed for 3/4 of the 2nd book) and a roommate (who admitted to shrieking so many times she was sure the neighbors would call the cops). as for me, i just refused to put the book down...reading it as i crossed the street at work to collect some files... jumping after a tense scene when a co-worker would come in the door... and curling up on my bed in a ball crying at one horribly sad scene.
if you need a good read... call me. you can borrow twilight. there is a 300+ person waiting list at the library

don't judge me.

likely story

wowwwweeee
What an AWESOME trip! The weather was gorgeous, the beach was so fun, great food, and the house... OH the house!
God was so kind to us the entire trip!
There were such sweet moments, lots of laughter and fun between old friends.One of my favorite things in the whole trip happened the 2nd morning. Bethany was telling some story... just something normal, and Shaynah said "Likely story Coda!" We laughed. A few minutes later Bethany left to go to the bathroom and I suggested that anything Bethany said the rest of the day, we respond with "Likely story!"And we did. And she never really caught on. But it would be something as simple as "wow, these chips are good"... "LIKELY STORY CODA!"
anyway
here are some pics of our lovely time!

Here are some pics of the house. It was perfect for us, and we are making plans to return! our cute little kitchen (directly out our kitchen door, to the left was the shower. It was AWESOME!!!
the screened porch. A perfect place for quiet times, and night time hang outs
Bethany giving the grand tour... to you. Yes you!
The first night, after arriving pretty late, we ran down to the beach. It was just across the street from us. The water was sooo warm all weekend!

As you can see, Shaynah was quite excited to be there

Making dinner the first night... it was a group effort
salmon, shrimp, asparagus, grilled mushrooms, peppers and onions...
SOOO GOOD
after dinner, we went back to the beach...
loverly shayray
Kristie and Bethany... (the 3 of us were an accountability group back in the day...)

Back in our accountability group days, Kristie and I would tease Bethany about her dancing (that is what she went to school for...). This is them preforming and interpretive dance for us on the beach

a pub we stopped at in Charleston. The windows were gorgeous
me and KR in Charleston. The wind was crazy near the water. We were all rocking some fantastic music video hair

my favorite house on rainbow row. I will live there day. Mark my words.... really. Mark them.
While in Battery Park, we saw a girl having senior pictures taken. They were painfully cheesey. So we decided to recreate them... it made some of the onlookers laugh
(look over Bethany's shoulder... you will see our muse)
such ladies. (please notice my sunburn... I think Bethany was the only one who didn't get burned at all... poor Kristie got the worst of it)
sad to go home!

Can't wait till next year!
